Obesity

Obesity is a state characterized by an absolute and relative excess of the reserves fat stocked in the adipose tissue. Obesity results when the size or number of fat cells in a person’s body increases.

A fit person has approximately 30 billion fat cells. When a person gains weight, fat cells grow in size and also their number increases. When the same person starts losing weight, these cells shrink in size, the number of fat cells stay the same.

This is part of the reason that once you gain a significant amount of weight, it is more difficult to lose it. However, some recent studies seem to imply that fat cells can be destroyed as a result of certain medications. We find a lot of obese people around due to changes in lifestyle and lack of physical work. Obese people are the most prone to diseases such as coronary heart failures, high blood pressure and diabetes. Being obese not only alters the appearance of a person, but the whole quality of life, he or she tends to lose self-esteem by becoming more self-conscious, it increases the health risks, it creates depression and the physical activity is limited.
