Carbohydrates are compounds which consist hydrogen, oxygen and carbon. These compounds are linked together by energy-containing bonds. There are two types of carbohydrates. These are the complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates. The complex carbohydrates such as fiber and starch are also known as the polysaccharides. The simple carbohydrates are called either monosaccharides (one sugar molecule) or disaccharides (two sugar molecules). Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose in the digestive tract. Glucose is the body’s primary source of fuel and it also provides energy for the body cells and tissues.

Low carbohydrate diets or low carb diets are diets that restrict carbohydrate consumption. Instead of consuming foods high in carbohydrates, it is replaced by increased proteins or fats consumption. A lot of people had been using low carb diet and Banting since the 19th century.
Low carb diets differ by the recommended proportion of carb intake and methods of which source of carbohydrates should be consumed and which source of carbohydrates should be avoided. In general, vegetables are better than fruits and fruits are better than grains. In low carb diets, all processed sugar should be eliminated, if not, reduced.
